More Meme & DW Rocks

Okay, so VERY late because of unexpected hospital and power-outage interruption. I actually wrote this days ago but haven't been able to post, so throwing it up now. (I WILL do all 30 days, just not consecutively.)

Day 04 - Your favorite show ever
This is really, really hard. My fandom entry point was pretty much Buffy, and that remains one of my fondest TV loves because of that. Then there's Firefly, which was not only one of the best complete show runs ever, but was also something of an epic fandom story. The fandom that got a movie made, seeing the sneak peeks of that movie with a bunch of other fans - all fond, fond memories. There's also my really early shows that I loved - The Young Riders, which would have been my first fandom if I'd known fandom existed, back then, The Muppet Show, cable shows that got axed early, like Carnivàle or Dead Like Me.

I think in the end though, I have to go with Firefly. Because Firefly was the most cohesive fannish EXPERIENCE for me. I didn't watch it as it aired, in its entirety, but I watched the fandom grow, and was in it from the start, at least from an observation point of view, pretty much. I read the meta and was there in the fandom, pulling for the show's renewal, and then for the movie to happen.

And the experience aside, the show itself was an education for me. It made me realize that no, I didn't dislike Sci-Fi, I just didn't like entirely conventional sci-fi much of the time. It was Firefly that made me open the door to other fannish shows that I came to love, like Battlestar.

Its short run kept the show from ever teetering into the mid-season blahs, or teetering too far from where it started. Firefly gave us Nathan Fillion, or at least brought him to our attention. It gave us River Tam, and Reavers, and Wash and Jayne's hat. It gave us, most importantly, Mal Reynolds, and I think it's my utter and undying love for Mal that, in the end, puts this show into my top slot. Nostalgia probably keeps it there, and I'm sure that I've got my rose colored glasses on a bit about the fandom, because it was such an enchanted honeymoon - but yeah, I'm going with Firefly.

In unrelated news - how awesome is the new cut-tag code, and the crossposting options on DW? SERIOUSLY awesome. The cut tag thing seems to mess up if there's code beneath the cut right now, but I'm sure they'll fix it soon.
